New Mexico is bordered by on the north by Colorado, by Oklahoma on the east, by Texas and Mexico on the south, and by Arizona on the east. Utah touches the far northwest corner of the state. New Mexico is the 5th largest state by area, and with a population of approx. 1.8 million is the 36th most populous state. The major industries in New Mexico include mining (potash, copper, silver, uranium), oil, natural gas, and tourism. New Mexico was admitted to the Union as the 47th state on  January 6, 1912. New Mexico was named Named by the Spanish, in reference to Mexico. The nickname of New Mexico is  Land of Enchantment.

New Mexico has several state taxes, including a personal income tax, gross receipts tax on businesses, which is generally passed on to the consumer, and therefore resembles a sales tax, and property taxes.
