Nebraska is bordered by South Dakota on the north, by Iowan and Missouri on the east, by Kansas and Colorado on the south, and by Wyoming on the west. Nebraska is the 16th largest state by area, and with a population of approx. 1.7 million, is the 38th most populous state. Major industries of Nebraska include farming (corn, soybeans, wheat, sorghum), grain processing, meat-packing, and the Air Force Strategic Air Command, Nebraska was admitted to the Union as the 37th state on March 1, 1867. The name Nebraska is from an Oto Indian word that means "flat water" (referring to the Platte River, which means "flat river" in French). Nebraska's nickname is the Cornhusker State, and The Tree Planters' State.

Nebraska has several state taxes, including a personal income tax, state sales tax, and property taxes.
