 Mississippi is bordered by Tennessee to the north, by Alabama to the east, by Louisiana and the Gulf of Mexico to the south, and by Arkansas and Louisiana to to the west (across the Mississippi River). Mississippi is the 22nd largest state by area, and with a population of approx. 2.8 million, is the 31st most populous state. The major industries of Mississippi include farming (cotton, corn, soybeans, rice), oil, textiles, electronic equipment, transprtation equipment, and fishing. Mississippi was admitted to the Union as the 20th state on December 10, 1817. The origin of the name of the state of Mississippi is perhaps from the Ojibwa (Chippewa) Indian words "mici zibi," which means "great river" or "gathering of waters". The nickname of Mississippi is the Magnolia state.
Mississippi has several state taxes, including a state income tax, state sales tax, and property tax.
