Michigan is bordered on the north by Lake Superior, by Lake Huron, Lake St. Clair and Lake Erie on the east, on the south by Indiana and Ohio, on the west by Wisconsin. Michigan is the 11th largest state by area, and with a population of approx. 9.9 million is the 8th most populous state. Michigan entered the Union as the 26th state on January 26, 1837. The major industries of Michigan include car manufacturing, farming (corn, soybeans, wheat), timber, and fishing. Michigan is from an Algonquian Chippewa Indian word "meicigama" that means "big sea wate" (referring to the Great Lakes). The nickname of Michigan is the "Wolverine State".
